Denver’s Gambrell tabbed NCAA First Star of the Week

University of Denver freshman forward Dylan Gambrell has been named the NCAA First Star of the Week.

Gambrell, from Bonney Lake, Wash., and a Colorado Thunderbirds graduate, led the Pioneers to a sweep of in-state rival Colorado College. On Thursday, he had three points on a goal and two assists, including one on the game winner in a 4-1 victory. On Saturday, at the “Battle on Blake” outdoor game inside Coors Field, he had a goal and an assist in another 4-1 win against the Tigers.

For the weekend, he registered five points on two goals and three assists to go along with 10 shots on goal and a plus-2 rating and was also the NCHC Rookie of the Week. For the season, he leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 11 goals and 24 assists.

He is also the second DU player in a row to grab this honor as Danton Heinen was tabbed First Star on Feb. 16.

In addition, Heinen (Offensive Player of the Week) and Will Butcher (Defenseman of the Week) also earned weekly honors from the NCHC.

Butcher recorded four assists last week and the Colorado Avalanche prospect also registered a plus-2 rating over the course of the two wins and blocked a pair of shots. This is the fourth time this season that Butcher has been named NCHC Defenseman of the Week.

Heinen tallied four points against the Tigers on two goals and two assists. The Boston Bruins prospect earned Second Star of the Game honors in Thursday’s road victory and was named the No. 1 Star at the “Battle on Blake.” This is the third time this season that Heinen has been named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week.
