Smith decides on Cornell University

Former Colorado Thunderbird Brendan Smith, from Centennial, has committed to play college hockey at Cornell University.

“I’m incredibly excited to commit to a school like Cornell,” said Smith, a defenseman with the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Omaha Lancers.  “Cornell was an easy choice due to their rich tradition on and off the ice.

“My mom also went to Cornell so that helped in the decision process. I would not be where I am at without the Lancers organization, especially the coaching staff.  Every day I come to the rink they make me a better player and person. I can’t thank them enough.”

Smith has recorded three points (one goal) through 10 games this season.  He netted a shorthanded tally in the 4-2 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers on October 25th, the first goal he has scored in the USHL regular season.  The 18-year-old played 34 games for the Lancers last season and dished out a pair of assists.  He also added a goal in four playoff contests.

“We’re thrilled for Brendan,” said Lancers head coach Brian Kaufman. “He’s already established himself as a reliable defenseman for us and his skill set will translate well to the college game.”
