Gambrell leads DU to two more wins, earns NCHC weekly rookie award
University of Denver freshman forward Dylan Gambrell has been named the NCHC Rookie of the Week for the third consecutive week.
It’s also the fifth time overall this season that the Colorado Thunderbirds graduate has taken home the honor.
Gambrell registered four points this past weekend on two goals and two assists, helping Denver earn a two-game sweep of Western Michigan at Lawson Arena. He also extended his team-high point streak to 11 games, a run in which he’s tallied seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points.
The native of Bonney Lake, Wash., scored the game-winning goal in Friday’s victory and assisted on Matt VanVoorhis’ game winner the following evening. He also recorded a pair of special teams points (one shorthanded goal, one power-play assist) and registered a plus/minus rating of +3 over the course of the two games.
Currently leading Denver in scoring for the season, Gambrell ranks tied for second in the NCAA (first in the NCHC) in points by a first-year player with 39 points (13 goals, 26 assists).
He came in at No. 149 on the National Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau’s list of draft-eligible North American skaters in last month’s mid-term rankings.
