Colorado Select sends trio to USA Hockey Nationals

The Colorado Select Girls Hockey Association (CSGHA) reestablished itself as the dominant force in elite girls hockey in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region during this year’s playoff season.

Over the past month, CSGHA has brought home a C470 league championship at the 12U level, a state championship at the 14U Tier II level, a second-place finish in the Junior Women’s Hockey League (JWHL) at the 16U Tier I level and three Rocky Mountain District championships at the 14U Tier II, 16U Tier I and 19U Tier I levels.

The three district championship teams all played a three-game series against the Dallas Stars Elite during the second weekend of March and all earned berths to the USA Hockey Youth Nationals March 31-April 4.

The 14U Tier II team (pictured, top), coming off a state championship the previous weekend, lost their first game, but came back with 5-0 and 5-1 wins to take the series. The 14U team is off to nationals in Burlington, Vt.

Meanwhile, the 16U Tier I team (pictured, middle) returned from Buffalo with a second-place finish in the JWHL and also lost its first game to Dallas, but dominated the next two games in 5-0 and 7-1 wins and is off to Blaine, Minn.

The 19U Tier I team (pictured, bottom) had the shortest weekend of the three national championship-bound teams, closing out Dallas in just two games with 4-2 and 5-1 scores and earning their trip to Blaine.

The association has also announced the return of Tier I head coaches Karen Rickard (19U Tier I) and Eric Mayhew (16U Tier I) and created a revamped 19U Tier I program focused on positioning the association’s flagship team on a path to tremendous success.

Registration for the Tier I tryouts being held May 13-15, 2016 will open April 4 on the CSGHA website.
