Colorado native, Jaguars, Team Colorado, 14ers alum Castillo finds NCAA D-III Hood ‘right fit for me’
Kamilah Castillo wrapped up her youth hockey career in 2025-26 with the Colorado 14ers 19U AAA team.
Next season, Castillo will head to the NCAA ranks after recently committing to Division III Hood College, a school located in Frederick, Md.
“The opportunity to commit to Hood College came after I reached out to coach Josh Funk, along with support from coach Hannah Westbrook,” Castillo said. “After continuing those conversations and going on a visit, I felt like Hood was the right fit for me. Hood was exactly what I was looking for in a school. My decision was influenced by many factors, especially the opportunity to contribute to a newer program that is already seeing a lot of success. The academics are also very strong in the area I plan to study (Business major, Sports Management minor), which was a key factor in my decision.
“Academics have always been a priority for me, along with athletics. I’ve always viewed them as a 1A and 1B situation.”
Born and raised in Colorado, Castillo started playing hockey around age six after learning how to skate.
“My aunt played, and my parents were interested in the sport, which is where my passion began,” said Castillo. “Watching the Colorado Avalanche from a young age also played a big role in growing my love for the game. I started with the Hyland Hills Jaguars at the 8U level and worked my way up from there, also playing for Team Colorado and the 14ers.
“All of my coaches have helped me grow in different ways as both a player and a person. One coach who stands out to me is Coach Kerry, who made a huge impact on my development by helping me improve my skills, build confidence, and grow as a person. Her support pushed me to reach new levels.”
Looking ahead, Castillo said she wants to giver herself options on opportunities in life, both on and off the ice.
“My short-term goals are to compete at the collegiate level, continue developing as a player, and earn my degree while pursuing my interests,” said Castillo. “Long term, I hope to build a career in the sports industry, although I’m still exploring the specific path I want to take.”
