Aspen native, Colorado College netminder Mbereko takes home weekly NCHC award

The NCHC announced today that Colorado College sophomore goalie Kaidan Mbereko has been named Goaltender of the Week.

Mbereko was a rock in net all weekend to backstop Colorado College to a sweep at Miami, conceding only one goal each night. He racked up an NCHC-best 61 saves in the series and led the conference with a .968 save percentage last weekend.

On Friday, the Aspen native turned aside 31 shots, including 13 in the second period, in a 5-1 win. He allowed only a third-period power-play goal to earn Third Star of the Game in the series opener. The next night, Mbereko made 30 more saves in a 4-1 win, including six short-handed stops to kill all five Miami power plays. He was named Second Star of the Game on Saturday.

Mbereko finished the weekend with a 1.00 goals-against average in the two wins. He helped CC go 8 for 9 on the penalty kill at Miami, making 16 saves while short-handed.

On the season, Mbereko improved to 7-3-0 while upping his save percentage to .908, which is fourth in the NCHC, and lowering his season GAA to 2.76.

During his youth hockey days in Colorado, Mbereko played for the Aspen Leafs and Rocky Mountain Snow Kings.
