Colorado’s and Utah’s Authoritative Voice of Hockey

On heels of national championship, Okanagan star, Denver native Mote signs with USHL’s Steel

Kaden Mote hit the pinnacle of youth hockey this spring, winning a USA Hockey 16U Tier I national championship with Okanagan Hockey Colorado.

Next season, the Denver native will play for the USHL’s Chicago Steel after recently signing with the club.

“The opportunity came through conversations with the Chicago staff over time,” said Mote. “They showed a lot of belief in my game and development, and it felt like the right fit for me both as a player and a person. Once everything came together, it was an easy decision. It’s really exciting. Leaving home is a big step, but it’s something I’ve been working toward for a long time. Being able to compete at a higher level every day and push myself against top players is a great opportunity, so I’m looking forward to it.

“Moving players to NCAA Division I is a huge part of why the USHL is so appealing. It’s one of the best development leagues in the world, and it gives players a great path to Division I hockey. Being in that environment every day is something I’m really excited about.”

In addition to Okanagan, Mote also skated for NCYH and the Colorado Thunderbirds during his youth hockey days.

“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of great coaches across those programs,” Mote said. “There have been so many who have helped develop my game and also shape who I am, both on and off the ice. I also want to give a huge thanks to some of my biggest supporters and advocates – David Clarkson, Brooke Wilfley, John Mitchell, Jesse Predhomme, and Kyle Ostrow. Over the past few years, they’ve challenged me, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and helped me become the best version of myself.

“Some of the biggest highlights for me have been building lifelong friendships with teammates and, most recently, winning a national championship with OHC. That experience and the group we had is something I’ll always remember.”

Next season squared away, Mote can now focus on what he’ll need to do to stay on the ice once the puck drops on the 2026-27 campaign.

“Short term, I want to come in, earn my spot, and contribute to the team however I can while continuing to improve my game every day,” Mote said. “Long term, my goal is to play Division I hockey and keep pushing to the highest level possible. Off the ice, I want to stay focused on school and continue to grow as a person.”
