Former Thunderbirds teammates Yoon, Hawkinson named co-captains at NCAA D-I Colorado College

Bryan Yoon and Brian Hawkinson were teammates with the Colorado Thunderbirds from 2009-14 and after Hawkinson transferred to Colorado College prior to 2020-21, the two became teammates once again on the NCAA Division I Tigers.

For the 2021-22 season, the duo will serve as co-captains of the Tigers.

“We are proud to announce Bryan Yoon and Brian Hawkinson as co-captains,” said first-year Colorado College head coach Kris Mayotte. “We have a number of great leaders in our locker room, but Bryan and Brian have stood out in terms of their preparation and commitment to Tiger hockey. They also have earned a tremendous amount of trust from their teammates.”

Yoon, a defenseman from Parker, entered the season as the team’s active scoring leader with 45 points (five goals, 40 assists) in 93 games. He was selected to the NCHC all-Rookie Team as a freshman after finishing second in the NCHC and third in nation among freshmen with 23 assists. His 26 points (three goals, 23 assists) that season were the most by a CC freshman defenseman since Scott Swanson had 48 in 1995-96. Yoon finished second on the team with 16 assists as a sophomore and posted a goal and an assist in 19 games last season.

Hawkinson, meanwhile, appeared in 23 games and notched two goals and one assist last season, his first as a Tiger after spending two years at Miami University. The forward from Centennial scored 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) in 60 games for the RedHawks, including 16 as a freshman, the second-most by a rookie on the team in 2018-19.

Each player has registered one assist in six games this season.

Yoon played for the Thunderbirds from 2009-14 and Hawkinson from 2009-15. Both then played junior hockey as Yoon skated for the BCHL’s Wenatchee Wild and USHL’s Tri-City Storm and Hawkinson also for the Storm, captaining the team in 2017-18 with Yoon an alternate captain.
